We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Ernestine McNeil, Vowell’s Bakery Manager, who transitioned Thursday, September 27th. We will remember Mrs. McNeil for her delicious and beautifully decorated cakes. Her smile and pleasing personality will be missed. Please keep her family in your prayers.
Our hearts are saddened with the death of Mrs. Katee Wedgeworth, City of Forest employee and former Burns Clothing saleslady. She passed at Lackey Hospital Wednesday, September 26th. Black ribbons were worn by City of Forest employees during Wing Dang Doddle at Gaddis Park on Saturday. Our prayers are with her husband, Phillip, and their 18-month-old son, Trent. Please keep her family in your prayers. Memorial arrangements are incomplete.

A beautiful Celebration of Life was held for Mrs. Dorothy “Nell” Derrick, a graduate of Hawkins High School, Saturday, September 29th at Greater Deliverance COGIC where Bishop Daniel T. Littleton officiated and delivered her eulogy. Mrs. Stacie Murray was the mistress of ceremony and other program participants were Elder Vernada Pinkston, Ms. Kim Watts and Ms. Nykemia Brown. Ms. Tina Craft and the Greater Deliverance Choir provided the music. Mrs. Derrick was remembered as one who enjoyed family, cooking, reading and watching Hallmark movies. Our prayers are with her family especially her husband, James, and children, Sharon (Von) Moore, Jamie (Kathy), Lawanda, and Christina (Zontay) Carr.

We enjoyed visiting with Mrs. Lillie Rodrequiz and Ms. Pearl Holifield, who were injured in an auto accident. Both were in good spirit and are looking forward to returning to services at Lynch Chapel U. M. Church. Please keep them in your prayers. We are also pleased to see that Clark Jackson, who was also injured in that accident, has returned to his ushering job.
The St. Mark M. B. Church family welcomed members of the public to their Prayer Breakfast/Program where the theme was “Moving Forward after the Death of a Loved One.” The event, coordinated by Mrs. Bonnie Floyd Stowers, was kicked off with a delicious homecooked breakfast where more than 85 persons enjoyed the meal. Following the meal and several prayers, there was praise and worship. Pastor Calvin Lindsey welcomed and greeted those of us in attendance. Makeba White from BI Nursing Care and Gretchen Luvene from Families First for Mississippi provided information on their services. Panelists sharing their experiences surrounding surviving the death of loved ones were Mesdames Ann Elizabeth Henderson, Tammy Colbert, Helen Rogers, and Joanne Bradshaw Brown. Robert Johnson was the facilitator. Spiritual advice was given by Rev. Sheldon Thomas and Brother Scott Thomas and legal advice was shared by Attorney Constance Slaughter-Harvey. Other program participants were Roxana Rogers, Pat Stokes, Shelia Bradshaw, and Yarsha Walker who provided beautiful music and lyrics.
Lighting of memorial candles and releasing of balloons were special segments of the program. Special appreciation to the St. Mark Church family, Pastor Calvin Lindsey, and Mrs. Bonnie Stowers for such a relevant and much needed service to our community. We appreciate Mr. and Mrs. Eddie (Tina) Brown and Martin making this program a priority. Let’s keep them in our prayers. We are looking forward to the second program.
Happy belated birthday to Courtney Funches of Yazoo City. She celebrated her 9th birthday Saturday at Malico Grandview Theater. Following her birthday party, she and her guests, including her sister Caelyn, cousin James “Tre”, New Hope classmates and friends, enjoyed “Small Foot” at the theater. Her parents, Reggie and Tess Funches, were the chaperons. Courtney is the granddaughter of Cynthia Melton and Ella Funches.
Thanks to parents and volunteers who worked at the Legacy Harvest Fundraiser projects Friday. Proceeds will benefit the In-School Mentoring Programs at Hawkins and Scott Central.
