Legacy School Supply Program Was Successful
Our prayers are with the family of the late Mrs. Willie Mae Gray who transitioned Tuesday, August 1st and was memorialized Saturday, August 5th at Sherman Hill U. M. Church. Rev. Tony Ashford officiated and Minister Lewis Gray delivered the eulogy. Ms. Michelle Hunt was the mistress of ceremony. Other program participants were Pastors Tony Ashford and Mary Bobbitt, Mesdames Pecolia Cox Morris and Lena Lawrence. Music was provided by the Cox Brothers and R. C. Williams. Mrs. Gray was remembered as a loving and caring mother. Our prayers are with her children, Johnnie, Allen, Booker, Dessie Greer, Patricia Evans, and Pamela Gilbert. Holifield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Our prayers are with Tom and Maria Ashour and family in the loss of his father, Paul Ashour, who passed Friday at his Texas home. Please remember his family in your prayers.
Please continue to remember our readers, who are facing health challenges, in your prayers, namely Angel Martinez, Bonnie Russell Hodge, Sid Salter, Betty Russell, Gwendolyn Harvey Kelley (who underwent brain surgery and is doing well), and others who are similarly situated.
The Legacy family expresses appreciation to volunteers Miriam Mejia, Dorothy Pinkston, Deshay Reed, Lavarious Ward, Constance Olivia and James “Tre” Burwell, Katia Paz, Roy Pinkston and Constance Slaughter Harvey for assisting with the Fifteenth Annual School Supply Closet Program where students whose parents are unemployed or experiencing serious challenges were provided school supplies and book bags. More than 105 students participated in the Closet and accepted the Legacy challenge to maintain good grades and become eligible to receive refills on their school supply bags. Refills are available upon presentation of progress reports, which show good grades, at the Legacy Office. Only students who received these supplies and whose parents signed appropriate forms are eligible for this incentive treat. Let’s continue to support our school children as they prepare to continue their studies.
Special thanks to donors and supporters of this annual School Supply Closet Program, namely Legacy, Scott County Bar Association, Forest Rotary Club, Todd Pinkston, Marlo Perry, Vowell’s, The OLIVIA Group, Tom Miles, Ruthie Lay, Bertha Moore, Evans Memorial Funeral Home and Elise Durbin, Esq.
We enjoyed the Alcorn Mixer sponsored by the Scott County ASU Chapter where Rev. Johnny Qualls provided a pep talk and challenge after opening the event with prayer. Charles Longmire welcomed those in attendance, including graduates from ECCC, JSU, Tougaloo, U of MS, and Rust College. The purple and gold décor was most attractive and the dinner consisted of delicious food. Debra Lowery coordinated the mixer and encouraged participation by all in attendance. Congratulations to the event committee members.
Constance Slaughter Harvey was among the more than 600 members of the National Bar Association who attended the 45th Convention held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Ontario, Canada last week. She and several other members enjoyed a day trip to Niagara Falls, CA and capped off the day with a delicious meal at the Skylon Tower where they enjoyed the scenery, from the revolving restaurant, especially the Falls. They also enjoyed a ride down the Niagara River. In 1970, Slaughter-Harvey spoke at the same hotel to the Universal Unitarian Convention members several months after her graduation. The hotel presented her with several gifts and tokens of appreciation.
