When the Lake Hornets traveled to Sebastopol this past Friday night they were listed as the visitors for the evening, but they were not at their long-standing rivals home stadium for a friendly visit. The Hornets were there to put on an offensive and defensive show in route to blowing out the home standing Bobcats. After dropping their season opener to Pelahatchie, the Hornets were laser focused and made the Friday night trip to “The Pool” with one goal and that was to leave with a statement win, and that they did.
After blowing out the Clarkdale Bulldogs in their season opener Sebastopol could not get anything going against their in-county rival. The Hornets took control of the game from the beginning by scoring early and often. Lake got on the scoreboard first early in the first quarter and went on to build up a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets kept the momentum from the first quarter rolling right into the second quarter. Both teams mimicked their first quarter scoring totals in the second period and Lake put up another 13 unanswered points to go in to halftime with a commanding 26-0 lead.
The Hornet’s offensive unit gave Sebastopol’s defense problems all night long and the Bobcat offense was not able to stay on the field to give their defense any long breaks as they could only muster 182 yards on offense. Even though the Bobcat defense spent a majority of the game on the field they played hard until the very end.
In the third quarter Lake again had two unanswered scores bringing the score to 38-0 as the third quarter came to an end.
In the fourth quarter Lake kept the ball and the clock moving with the ground game. The Hornets would find paydirt one last time before the Bobcat offense finally cracked the code to the endzone and scored their lone touchdown of the night bringing the scoring to an end with the final score 45-7 in favor of the visitors in green and grey.
Sebastopol’s Coach Mooney said that his team had a good week of practice and came into the game with a good offense game plan. “I thought our offensive plan was very good, but we just couldn’t execute,” said Mooney.
Both teams evened up their season record at 1-1. Lake moves on to host Clarkdale this Friday night while Sebastopol travels to McLaurin to take on the Tigers. Both games kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
