Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears sophomore catcher Easton Porter has signed a scholarship to continue his collegiate career with the Braves of Alcorn State University.
Alcorn baseball is an NCAA Division I member of the Southwest Athletic Conference.
Porter (6’ 1”, 190), a graduate of Morton High School, had a pair of doubles, an RBI and two steals in the virus-shortened season. He said he enjoyed his time at Southwest and that “it felt like home.” He also stated the coaches “worked hard to make sure we (the players) could go to the next level if we wanted to.”
Summing up his feelings regarding Southwest, Porter said “I’ll always be a Bear and I’ll come (back) when I can.”
Bears head coach Ken Jackson said Porter is “the type of player that is just going to keep getting better. He has really improved his game (during) the last year. He handles the pitchers very well and works hard defensively. Alcorn is getting (someone who) is a team player and will work hard to make himself and the team better.”
Various factors played into Porter’s decision to sign with the Braves. “It was the only DI offer I got,” he said. Also, he said “They’re competitive, somewhat close to home and I think I can compete in the SWAC.” Also playing a part in Porter’s decision was the opportunity to rejoin former Southwest teammate Lane Gordon, a pitcher for the Braves.
Porter said he plans to major in Business at Alcorn and hopes one day own his own business.
