The Lake Hornets hosted the Union Yellowjackets last Friday night. Both teams came into the game very evenly matched and picking a winner was a toss-up. Lake came in on a five game winning streak and looking to win at home and then take a week off to prepare for cross county rival Scott Central. In Lake took off one quarter to early as by looking at the scoreboard it does not even look like they showed up for the fourth quarter.
This game was tight throughout and through three quarters the teams were tied at 7-7. When the fourth quarter got underway the visiting Yellowjackets were driving and just two minutes into the final period Union scored to take the lead. The fans in Death Valley expected their Hornets to come right back and threaten to tie the game, but from that moment on it was all Union as they outscored the Hornets 21-0 in the fourth quarter to earn the district win and drop Lake to 5-2 on the season and 0-1 in the district.
Up until the fourth quarter these two teams had been evenly matched and it looked as if we would have a fourth quarter thriller that would come down to the very last plays. The Yellowjackets had a much different plan as they used their cruising ground game to chew up yardage, chew up time on the clock and ultimately chew up Lake.
The Hornets lone score on the night came in the second quarter when QB Mickey Parker connected with Zywon Ledbetter for a 30-yard scoring strike. While the Hornets used their passing game sparingly throughout the game the Union offense was all about the ground attack and racked up 403 rushing yards on the Hornet defense who simply wore down in the end.
Both of these teams remain ranked in class 2A as Lake comes in at #8 heading into their week off while Union is #7 heading in to their showdown with Scott Central.
After the week off the Hornets will face cross county foe Scott Central in on October 11.
