As our community prepares for the Thanksgiving season, our thoughts seem to focus on those among us who are without the basics such as clothing, food, housing and other necessities. While we share and expect no publicity regarding our actions, we, at Legacy and Slaughter Foundations, salute those who share and serve others without any expectation of recognition, reward or publicity. We salute local churches and ministries for serving as the hands and feet of Jesus during the season; Mrs. Shira Fenderson and her Americold staff for their assistance; El Pueblo and staff for reaching out to those in need and providing basic necessities; Alderwoman Cynthia Slaughter Melton for serving residents at Lackey Convalescent Home on a monthly basis; Veterans who continue to serve our community by helping others; Mrs. Bonnie Stowers for reaching out and providing assistance (food) year-round to those in need; and lastly, Supervisor Joe McGee for reaching out and providing delicious sweet potatoes to many in our communities. We appreciate our partnership with him and challenge other entities and officials to reach out, especially during this Thanksgiving season, and provide and protect those who are among the most vulnerable. If our readers want to share their appreciation for businesses, officials, or individuals who reach out and serve others, please contact us at leacef@aol.com.

The Forest Public Library Roundtable Discussion (“Slow History: The Kind That Takes Time”) was held on November 16th and Forest Librarian Dianne McLaurin facilitated the discussion. Among those participating as panelists were banker Gene Walker, former librarian Shawna Alexander, and Scott County Times columnists Sibyl Gordy and Constance Slaughter-Harvey. Also participating was Mrs. Mary Ward Bounds, daughter of the late Alderman Imogene Ward who was the first African American Alderman in Morton. He and the first African American Forest Alderman W. L. Slaughter were elected in 1977. There were presentations (exhibits) and discussions regarding the “recorded history” of the growth of the county prior to 1930. Concerns and questions were raised regarding the total representation of all segments of the community as well as the county’s history (diversity) as recorded and catalogued in the library. The discussion was lively and stimulating and we’re looking forward to another Slow History Round Table Discussion.
