“We are here to be witnesses of love and to celebrate life, because life has been created in the image of God. Life is to love and to be loved. That’s why we all have to take a strong stand so that no child — boy or girl — will be rejected or unloved. Every child is a sign of God’s love.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Answer to 2026 Black History Month Quiz Teaser # 870: Dr. Katherine Johnson loved math and early in her career, she was called a “Computer.” She helped NASA put an astronaut into orbit around Earth, and then she helped put a man on the Moon. As a young girl, she loved to count even the steps into the church and forks and plates when she washed the dishes. She loved to learn, and she went through school quickly. She started high school at 10 and graduated from college at 18. After college, she became a teacher and taught school until she married and had children. When she was 34, she heard that NASA was hiring African American women to solve problems, and these workers were called “computers.” She soon learned so much that she left her job as a computer programmer and became a team member on various space projects for NASA. In 1962, the United States decided to send people to the Moon.
Dr. Johnson studied how to use geometry for space travel and determined the paths for spacecraft to orbit Earth and land on the Moon. NASA used Dr. Johnson’s math, and it worked! Later, her math helped send astronauts to the Moon and back. She worked for NASA for more than 30 years and retired in 1986. Dr. Johnson died on February 24, 2020, at the age of 101 years.
