A beautiful Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Edric “Petey” Cochez Harper was held March 22nd at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church with Pastor Ralph James officiating and delivering his eulogy. Mrs. Cynthia Johnson was the Mistress of Ceremony and other participants were Rev. Eric Jones, Ms. Michelle Sharp, and Ms. Pamela Banks. He was a 1995 Morton High School graduate who furthered his education at MS Valley State University. Our prayers are with his family including his mother Mrs. Clotee Lee and father Eddie Earl Davis, his children Tyree, Layla, and Nysia, and siblings J.D. (Veronica), Ladell, Larry and Cody, and his grandmother Mrs. Sarah Harper. W. F. Mapp Funeral Home was entrusted with his final arrangements.

St. Michael parishioners paid tribute to their Pastor, Fr. Adolfo Pasillas on Saturday and Sunday and wished him well on his journey to another assignment. He will remain St. Michael’s Pastor until a permanent pastor is named by Bishop Kopacz. Please keep him in your prayers.
Legacy Connection Youth Leadership Session Scholars James Burwell III, Nate James, Braylan Shepherd, Ja’Zieon Shepherd, Erin James, Halle Pace, Raigen Walker, and Autumn Jones met on Saturday, March 22 to read and practice leadership skills from 10:00 am-3:30 p.m. Legacy E.D. Burwell facilitated the session. Scholars enjoyed a 30-minute interactive presentation on personal hygiene by Scholar Intern James Burwell III. They enjoyed meeting Atty. Collette who has donated a literacy shelf of multicultural books and games for the Scholars for over 4 years. They enjoyed her inspiring stories and expressed appreciation for her thinking about them by purchasing fun literacy tools. Cursive/manuscript writing, partner reading, creative play, and other activities including preparation for the Women’s Empowerment Program were on their agenda. Thanks to parent Joniya Pace, mother of Halle Pace, for volunteering the entire six-hour session.
Congratulations to Scott Central Girls and Boys Powerlifting teams on their performance during the MHSAA State Championships. Kudos to Makayla Odom, Taniyah Body, Ashley Soto, Marquavious Bradford, Dakota Whitaker, Dabron Wash, Javion Buckley, Jon Guster, and Daniel Matheny. The Girls team won 3rd place overall and the Boys team placed 4th overall. Way to go!!!
Legacy’s Women’s Empowerment Program took place on Saturday, March 22 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Slaughter Legacy Library. Legacy recognized women who exhibit empowerment values by discussing the women in history who empowered us to be the best women that we can be.
As a woman led business, Legacy empowers women by discussing past and present women who make various contributions to supporting and uplifting women and Youth. Legacy facilitates conversations that provide value to and give voice to Youth and women who are often overlooked and underserved. We challenge our readers to empower other women, especially young girls by “Inspiring Generations.”
Scholar Halle Pace provided the opening prayer, Nate James presented the welcome, the occasion and empowerment tips were provided by Scholar Erin James, followed by the reading of various local women history makers which were listed in the program. Poetry readings were performed by Scholar Raigen Walker who read “A Courageous Heart,” Scholar Halle Pace who read “Sisterhood,” and Executive Director Constance Burwell who read “Empowered Women.”
Reflections on women who empowered them were provided by E.D. Constance Harvey-Burwell, Legacy Parent Committee Member Earnestine Reed, Atty. Collette Oldmixon from Poplarville, Board Treasurer Verna M. Myers, retired Bobbie Hollins, W.L. Slaughter Subdivision President Barbara Gray, and retired educator Martha Kincaid.
Scholars James Burwell III, Braylon Scott, and Ja’Zieon Shepherd presented a cool presentation to keep women cool under pressure and presented portable purse fans as gifts of appreciation. President Slaughter-Harvey provided the reflections of Legacy and strong women who impacted her life, and she challenged the Scholars and Change Agents to read books because they make you wise, not to let anyone deter you from your dreams, and be prepared to deal with people who mean you no good.
The Board Treasurer Myers complimented the Scholars on their demeanor, presentations, and participation. Scholar Erin James provided the closing prayer and Scholar Ja’Zieon Shepherd provided the closing and offered fresh fruit compliments of the Health is Wealth Project.

The MHV Capital Area Spring 2025 planning meeting was held via zoom on March 24th at the Scott County Extension Office. Plans were made for the meeting to be held at the Copiah County office in Hazlehurst on April 22nd. Scott County was represented in the meeting by Scott County Extension Agent Rayne Arnold, Sig Miles and Cynthia Slaughter Melton.
We enjoyed the Lenten Speaker Series Wednesday, March 26th Noon Luncheon at the Morton United Methodist Church. The speaker was Chief Master Sergeant E-9 Delano Barney. He challenged us to ask ourselves how God is calling us to serve. He further encouraged us to serve those in need and to re-examine our foundations of service. As usual, the fellowship and food were excellent. Hats off to the Food Committee members. Rev. Paul McDonald is the Pastor.
Mrs. Mary Alice Kirk celebrated her 85th birthday and enjoyed the love and fellowship of her family and guests. She was incorrectly identified as Mrs. Mary Alice Kent. Happy belated birthday Mrs. Kirk!!!!
