Travelin’, visitin’ and such: Dream trip, shared by Pastor Shelia Cumbest serving Morton UMC in her own words. “Some trips turn out to be memories for a lifetime. We had wanted to go to Alaska for a long time and our (spouse Chris, pastor of Wells UMC, Jackson) 40th anniversary seemed to be the perfect time. It was my brother’s hope to go this year and we had talked about it the day he died. We felt we needed to go for him as well. The pristine beauty of that place amazes everyone who goes. There are no words to describe it and even pictures don’t do it justice. We visited the Inside Passage, flew into and lodged in Juneau-but sights from the supply boat we took to Haines and Tenakee Springs gave us plenty to see and plenty of adventure!
The simplicity of life of our friends, Mark and Sara, also amazed us. It was great to have hosts to guide us! I recommend going and not being on a schedule. We fished, crabbed and boated to see humpback whales feeding! As I journaled close to the end of the trip, I wrote two solid pages of the sights I’d seen marmots, porcupines, black bear and cubs, eagles, mountain goats, sea lions, humpbacks, orcas, seals-just to name a few. Juneau has lots to offer with an excellent museum, the Mendenhall Glacier and wonderful hiking trails. All of which we enjoyed immensely!
The trip ended with a visit to the Shrine of St. Therese of Liseux on Douglas Island. It was founded in 1932. The stone chapel, stations of the cross, and the labyrinth gave a perfect ending to what was truly a spiritual experience. It was worth the 40-year wait!”
