Our prayers are with the family of the late Mrs. Johnnie Louise Moffett Lamb who transpired Wednesday at the University Medical Center in Jackson. Mrs. Lamb and her husband, Carl, resided in the W. L. Slaughter Subdivision. Memorial services are scheduled for Thursday, April 18th at Mt Nebo M. B. Church in Raleigh, MS at 11:00 a.m. Evans Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary Yvonne Gunn who transitioned April 8th in Forest. Memorial services, conducted by Rev. David Goree, were held at the Ott & Lee Chapel in Forest Thursday, April 11th. Our prayers are with her family, especially her grandson, Attorney Chris (Jackie) Gomillion.

We enjoyed the Kingdom Culture Conference held at the Strong Tower Worship Center April 11 through April 13th. Pastor M. R. Reagan (Strong Tower Worship Center) introduced Jack Giles who was the Thursday night speaker. Friday morning began with breakfast and welcome by Gerald Simmons. Additional speakers were Randell Simms, Paulette Butler, Dave Chamberlin, J. T. Strong, Brent Lewis and M. R. Reagan. Special thanks to Henry Slaughter and Shirley Sykes (Slaughter) for the invitation to attend.
Members and guests of the Legacy Health Is Wealth and Scott County African American Historical Society held their Lenten Luncheon Thursday, April 11th at the W. L. Slaughter Memorial Library. Mrs. Rita Parker was the coordinator and presided during the meeting. Others in attendance were Bobbie Ringo, Cynthia Melton, Elizabeth Ferrell, Roy Pinkston, Shirley Sykes, Henry Slaughter, Bonnie Stowers, Bobbie Hollins, Dorothy Pinkston, Mattye Evans, D. L. Bennett, Ester Perry and Andrew Crudup.
The North Scott High School Golden Class of 1969 celebrated their 50th Reunion Saturday, April 6th at the Forest Community Center. Prior to the program, they enjoyed lunch at Penn’s Fish House. Mesdames Bonnie Lee Wright (mistress of ceremony), Dora Odom Searcy, Carolyn Slaughter Fuqua, Innette Hughes Bradford, Sandra Faye McClendon (spouse), and Adolphus Lyles were program participants. Other classmates attending were Alton Ealy, Lonnie McClendon, Sylvester McClendon, West Ward, Emma Irene Murray, Thelma Keyes, Alice Burkes Futch, and Wanda Stowers Bivens. Others in attendance were former North Scott instructor Samuel Hoye, secretary Mattye Evans, Cynthia Slaughter Melton, Constance Slaughter-Harvey, McNorris Odom, and sibliings and spouses of classmates. It was an exciting time for classmates and guests. Memorial services were held for classmates who have transitioned. Special thanks to Golden Classmates who participated and to those who travelled great distances to join in the celebration!
Local attorney and Legacy president Constance Slaughter-Harvey was honored Saturday, April 13th at the 4 Your Occasion Banquet Hall by members of the National Organization of Retired State Trooper 2009. Retired trooper R. O. Williams was the coordinator and program guide. Colonel Chris Gillard/Director of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol brought greetings and expressed his appreciation to Attorney Harvey who filed the desegregation law suit, Morrow vs. Crisler in 1970. James Burwell, II and James Burwell, III (Tre’) were guests of the honoree.
Answer to Quiz Teaser # 483: Dr. Daniel Dewitt Gambrell, a native of Newton County, was the first African American medical doctor in Scott County. He graduated from Jackson State University and Meharry Medical College. He also served in the U. S. Army. After providing medical services at the University Medical Center, and in Yazoo, MS, he returned to east central Mississippi and opened his practice in Forest in the early 1990’s. He transitioned November 7, 2017 in Houston, TX.
