Embrace the opportunity of going to college
It has been an eventful second week of school. On Tuesday, SC hosted an open house and Thursday night was Meet the Rebels. Both events were well attended by students, parents, family and others. Such support increases the odds of success for our academic and athletic programs.
On Friday, the SC Rebels won their season opener against Enterprise by a score of 43-14. Please note that this week’s varsity game will be played on Thursday night when Scott Central will host the Morton Panthers.
At Harperville Baptist Church on Sunday morning, our youth and children choirs jointly performed “Old Church Choir.” Nic Boswell was the soloist and was just exceptional. He has a strong, commanding voice and is only a seventh grader. I look forward to seeing where his talent may take him.
This past week I was in Starkville a couple of days helping my youngest daughter move into her apartment. We made the mistake of going to the Starkville Wal-Mart on Saturday. It was more crowded than any Thanksgiving Black Friday sale. Shoppers, primarily mothers and their teenage college students, all wore harried and somewhat bewildered expressions. Everyone had a buggy and every buggy was overflowing with back to college “necessities.” There was total gridlock on many isles and tempers were pretty short. I stopped going to Black Friday sales several years ago and never again will I shop at a Wal-Mart on college move-in day.
I am praying that all my former students who are heading to college will have a great, memorable and rewarding year. Of course, I want them to all study hard and do well academically, but I also hope they embrace the opportunity and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience.
