Special thanks to Creighton University students who provided educational services to local students during the University break during October 14-19th. These young college students enjoyed working with the Excel family, Sisters Rita, Eileen, Pat and Brenda. They were most complimentary of the Excel family and the Morton students with whom they worked.
They were welcomed to Scott County by Legacy President Constance Harvey who also provided traditional Scott County goody bags. Offering volunteer services were Meg Murphy, Emily Peck, Kathleen Bever, Paul Martin, Hinman Zhou, Claire Jamar, Caitlin McFadden, Katelyn Axelson, and Libby Wilson. We appreciate the Excel staff for coordinating this volunteer trip. Thanks!
Legacy Mentees at Hawkins Middle School (Grades 5, 6, and 7) and Scott Central Attendance Center (Grades 6 and 7) paid tribute to Veterans with a Celebration under the direction of retired U. S. Navy E5/Petty Officer Second Class Shirley Sykes. In addition to learning about military history, choices and local veterans, Mentees also learned the value and importance of service to others.
They were reminded that the armed services should never be used as an ‘escape from home’ mechanism. Service in the military should be an extension of life goals. Assisting Petty Officer Sykes in this celebration were Mentors Barbara Dawson, Marquita Patrick, Bonnie Stowers, Elizabeth Douglas and Georgia Faye Patrick.
This Veterans’ Day Celebration is the first of many Legacy celebrations/tributes to our Veterans and their contributions to all of us. Special thanks to Legacy Board Member/Mentor Petty Officer Sykes!!!!!
We enjoyed the beautiful Engagement Party in honor of Chelsea Sorrells and Colby Yarbrough held Sunday, October 28th at the Forest United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall. The couple was all smiles and welcomed each guest. Best wishes to Chelsea and Colby as they plan their wedding.
We visited with former Scott County educators, Pilate Middle School Principal Dr. Sharon Hoye and Assistant Principal Darrin Gray. It was heartwarming watching them interact with students and other members of the Pilate Middle School family. We’re proud of them and wish them well.
We enjoyed the Our Mississippi’s Most Influential African Americans Gala held at the Westin Hotel in Jackson October 25th. Forest natives Constance Slaughter-Harvey and Patricia Watkins Bennett were among those honored. Congratulations!

A reminder to our readers that November is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. A colonoscopy can save your life.
Congratulations to 104-year-old Forest native, Mrs. Henrietta “Ma Henrietta” Horton who was among those casting ballots last Tuesday, November 6th in the historical voter turnout. If Mrs. Horton, who now lives in Clinton with her daughter Barbara Longmire, can get to the polls and cast her ballot, there should be no excuse that we are ‘too tired or too busy to vote.’ She also intends to cast her ballot November 27th. We are proud to have such a great legacy of citizen participation and empowerment! Thanks Mama Henrietta!
