Announcements: Morton MHV Club will hold the August meeting at Morton Public Library on Wednesday, August 1 beginning at 1 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
Activities at Excel Learning Center, 383 South Fourth Street are: Hamburger Plate Fundraiser-Thursday, August 16 from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon. The “Eat-In or Take-Out” meal includes a hamburger (trimmings), baked beans, cookie and beverage. All proceeds go to provide educational opportunities for the community....Conversational Spanish Classes (Basic Level I) with instructor, Luis Cartagena will be offered on Thursdays August 23-November 8 from 5-6:30 p.m. Fee for the twelve week course is $95. and provides CEU’s for students taking the class. We Care Missions Food Distribution dates for August are Friday, August 10 and Friday, August 24 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at Morton UMC, 29 Church Street. All recipients of food must provide required documentation for all members of the household.
Congratulations to: Richard Latham on being elected President of the National Wild Turkey Federation Mississippi Chapter. He will serve a four year term. A national non-profit organization promoting conservation projects through educational opportunities, the NWTF is headquartered in Edgefield, South Carolina. Latham is a member of the Bienville Chapter, one of the oldest established chapters in the state and nation.
To: Scott Regional Hospital, Morton — a division of Rush Health Systems, serving the area for 25 years, has received a 4-Star rating from the Centers of Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) for excellence in health care quality.
To: Kieth Herrington and Marvin Lindsey, local MDOT employees were recognized during a recent meeting of the Misissippi Transportation Commission for their heroic action in rescuing an injured motorcyclist whose location was obscured from the vision of passersby on the road because of the wooded area where the accident occurred. They rendered assistance and called for medical treatment for the victim in a local hospital.
Prayers and concern for: Susan Pickett Vanderford, Avery Gosnell of Vicksburg (18 month old granddaughter of Preston and Pam Holman), those impacted by the wild fires, flooding and other natural disasters, and continued concern for Stites Easterling, Dr. Carol Peebles of Baton Rouge, Louisiana (sister of Sarah Strohm), Wayne Neese, Helen Watkins and Douglas and Mozelle Herring of Starkville.

Travelin’, visitin’ and such: Out of town visitors in the home of Buddy and Nan Ellis recently were children, Carl and Lisa Ellis Wages and family of Mobile, Alabama; Steve and Beth Ellis Pouson and family of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Richie and Amanda Ellis of Pearl and family. They were pleased to find that their mom, Nan, was enjoying a rapid and comfortable recovery from surgery to repair a fractured hip. Needless to say they pampered her and tended to her every need.
Kathy Warren and Frisky Roland represented Morton MHV Club at the recent Consumer Science Meeting of the Scott county Extension Service to recommend ways that Extension can enhance the lives of the residents with programs of interest and provide educational events. Others representing MHV were Tressie Ware - Cluster Club, Vicky Hester - Ringgold Club and Master Gardeners, Lawanda McCaughn - Finances and Lanay Russum - Health Issues. The meeting was conducted by Anita Webb, MSU/Scott County agent.
Gail Griffin, Judy Stegall, Sarah Strohm, Frisky Roland and Kathy Warren of the Morton MHV club attended the “Christmas in July” workshop held at the MSU Experiment Station in Newton. Dr. Jim DelPrince, AFD, PFC, Assistant Extension Professor, Coastal MSU Research Experiment Station presented the program/demonstration. Dr. DelPrince is a nationally recognized floral designer and his expertise in designing of floral arrangements to enhance homes during Christmas, with adaptions for all seasons/holidays, is sought after throughout the country. MSU/Newton County Council hosted the event serving delicious refreshments prior to the program. The interactive presentation demonstrated the use of the many natural floral/foliage materials available in Mississippi for the arrangement of elegant or rustic decorations. The Harperville and Ringgold MHV clubs were represented, also. Following the program the Scott County ladies enjoyed a “Dutch Treat” lunch.
