Legacy Summer Campers appreciate volunteers
We are saddened by the death of Mr. Percy Parker who transitioned June 24, Sunday afternoon at Baptist Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer. Our prayers are with his family especially his wife, Mrs. Dora Parker, children and siblings. Memorial arrangements are incomplete.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Frances Gray Holbert who transitioned Thursday, June 14th. A beautiful homegoing was held at Christian Triumph Church in Morton with Rev. Willie Robinson officiating and delivering the eulogy. Mrs. Holbert was the sister of the late Mrs. Nadine Anderson, and taught school several years in Morton. She retired after teaching in Chicago for 30+ years. Please remember her family especially her children, Francis “BeBe” Burgess, Tina Grace, Phyllis Brown and Pam Brown, in your prayers.
Our prayers are with the family of the late Michael Hord, who transitioned after a lengthy illness. Please remember his family in your prayers, especially his wife, Mrs. Phyllis Hord and her family, Mr. Bendell and Mrs. Minnie Boyd of Morton.
We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Moses Lewis of Shelby and extend our prayers to his family especially his daughter, Mrs. Melanie Gentry of Cordova, TN.
Our prayers continue to be with Clark Jackson, Angel Martinez, Mrs. Johnnie Louise Lamb, and other readers who are facing health challenges.
It was good seeing Al Beltram and Mrs. Kathy Holllingsworth at St. Michael’s Sunday morning Mass. Both have been under the weather and unable to attend Mass. We also enjoyed spending time with Mrs. Willana Price and Mrs. Flo Chambers. Please keep these readers in your prayers.
We are thankful that Mrs. Roseann Lynn is doing well following surgery Friday, June 22nd in Asheville, N. C. Please continue to remember her in your prayers.
We were glad to see Army Major Andrew Moncrief and son when they attended Mass while home visiting his parents, Charles and Violeta Moncrief. Let’s continue to remember him in our prayers.
We join other Mississippians in expressing pride and congratulating the new Miss Mississippi, Asya Branch, who was crowned Saturday night in Vicksburg. This beautiful and talented African American and former Miss Tupelo will represent Mississippi at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City on September 9th. Way to go Miss Mississippi!!!
Congratulations to Angelic Le, who won the Champion Award at the MS Beta Convention in April, and last week placed first in the Robotics Showcase Division at the National Beta Convention in Atlanta. She shared her experiences following Mass at St. Michael. She expressed appreciation for the prayers. While in Atlanta, she enjoyed Six Flags. Way to go Angelic!!!
Congratulations to Christian Hollis, Northwest Rankin senior, who was nominated and selected to attend the American Legion’s youth leadership training program known as Boys State. While there, he was elected a state representative. Christian is the son of Andre and Anitra Hollis. Way to go Christian!
Congratulations to Tia Patrick, Tougaloo College student, who participated in the U. S. Labor partnership with Tougaloo College and was a member of the delegation to Seoul, Korea. She spent more than a month there and enjoyed the experience. Tia is the daughter of Chuck and Barbara Patrick, and the granddaughter of Otis and Barbara Ormond and Jim and Evelyn Patrick. Way to go Tia!!!!!
We enjoyed visiting with Bobby Ray Lyles and family as well as former Slaughter Scout Jamie White. We appreciate their support and prayers.
Special thanks to Legacy Summer CARE Camp volunteers including Constance Burwell, Andrew Crudup, Henry and Shirley Sykes-Slaughter, Mya Spivey, Maiah Patrick, Kenyada Cunningham, Matasha Harper, Jeremiah Bates, and Coach Datodrick Pinkston. Coach Pinkston provided the Wednesday Inspirational Message concerning the “5 Cees”, namely Christ, Character, Conduct, Consistency, and Commitment. It was a wonderful message. Thursday session was conducted by Henry and Shirley Sykes Slaughter where Change Agents practiced cursive writing, continued their creative writing journaling, and enjoyed painting on special projects.
Mrs. Pamelia Smith was installed as the Rotary District 6820 Governor (DG) Thursday, June 14th at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. She was installed by Greg Yank from Illinois who is Rotary International Director from Zones 30-31. DG Smith is the widow of the late Senator Rob Smith. We enjoyed the “Passing of the Gavel” and the delicious food and wonderful hospitality were memorable.

This community leader was very active in the political, social, economic and religious worlds of Scott County. She and her husband, painter and carpenter Petro Burge, were trailblazers in the business world of Scott County. Once again, Mrs. Charity Robinson provided the correct answer.
