Rebel Reward
Scott Central competed last week in a Mississippi Shooting Sports event at the Turcotte Shooting Range. The team is coached by Chandler Powell. Team members are Bryce Sessums, Evan Risher, Eli Cooper, Heath Rhodes, Eli Steward, Garen Richmond, Camden Richmond, Nic Boswell, Dylan Sumrall, Camdon Crimm, Connor Sigrest, Brennon Gardner and Brantley Waggoner.
Congratulations to seniors, Eli Cooper and Jalen Wells, on signing to play college football next year. Eli will play at East Central Community College and Jalen will be part of the Hinds Community College team.
The Rebel Reward Celebrations recently kicked off at Scott Central. Elementary students were recognized for their hard work and accomplishments in the areas of achieving the Honor Roll, All A’s, for exhibiting Positive Behavior, and meeting goals in Accelerated Reading, and I-Ready. They were treated to food, games and entertainment.
I very much appreciate the efforts of my neighbor, Will Boswell, in picking up the debris and liter found along the sides of the roads in Harperville. It is deplorable that people will not only toss cans and fast food trash from their cars, but are dumping garbage bags full of trash and other waste on the roadside.
Can we not take pride in our community, in our state, in our world? These are not the actions of outsiders, but of people who live in and are part of this community. Those of us who care about our community and world, must hold these litterers to a higher standard. Report offenders to the authorities. According to Miss. Code Ann. §97-15-29 the state penalties for littering for a first conviction is a fine between $50 and $250, with the option of community service, payment of damages, removal of waste, and payment of agency costs. For subsequent convictions the minimum and maximum fines are doubled. I suspect that if just a few violators were prosecuted, then we would see a significant reduction in the liter problem.
