Sittin’ and thinkin’: February comes from the Latin februa, which means “to cleanse”. The month was named after the Roman Februalia, which was a monthlong festival of purification and atonement.
Will the Groundhog see his shadow this February 2, 2021? This traditionally marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox.
Other holidays this month are: Valentine’s Day-February 14, President’s Day-February 15 and Ash Wednesday-February 17.
Weather Lore for February: There is always one fine week in February. If bees get out in February, the next day will be windy and rainy. Fogs in February mean frosts in May. Winter’s back breaks about the middle of February.
Puzzle of the month: What’s in the Fire, and not in the Flame?…What’s in the Master, and not in the Dame?...What’s in the Courtier. And not in the Clown?...What’s in the Country, and not in the Town?
Watch for the answer in the next issue of the paper.
