A dear friend and colleague of mine in Charleston, Mississippi is recovering from the COVID-19 virus. As a matter of fact, her entire family is recovering from the dreaded plague.
It started when her grown daughter was diagnosed positive, then her husband, her son-in-law, her son, and herself, and later her two grandchildren. Everyone in her family was stricken in a different manner by this very dangerous bug, displaying different symptoms amongst them all. Krista was hit harder than anyone though and was eventually airlifted from Charleston to The Med in Memphis when she developed bilateral pneumonia and her oxygen levels dropped.
She is recovering at home now and working some too at the Charleston newspaper she and her husband run.
Krista says that she got “Presidential Treatment” at The Med because she got pretty much the same meds President Donald Trump got when he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and also got to take a helicopter ride to the hospital.
She says that it is her opinion that one of the most important treatments she got was a plasma transfusion from a recovered COVID patient. She says she thinks that helped save her life and encourages people that have recovered to donate blood to help save others. She plans to do so herself once she is strong enough.
Although she is not recommending the same treatment for everyone, she did share what she learned while isolated in the hospital...alone.
Here is what she posted to one of her social media accounts.
As promised, here is the treatment plan I was given while in the hospital:
Plasma transfusion, Remdeziver (anti-viral drug), Steroids (lots of them), Zinc (very high doses), Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Mucinex, lots of oxygen, and an albuterol inhaler.
One of the night-time ICU nurses shared with me that her entire family (from age 5 to elderly) had suffered with Covid and she managed to keep them all out of the hospital. She said Zinc is the key... as soon as you learn you have it (or even before) start taking Zinc, along with the vitamins.
Stay hydrated — especially the little ones and the elderly.
She also said that Alka-Seltzer Cold and Flu has a ton of good stuff in it and really helps. Also important, sleep on your stomach, if possible.
Lastly, she said to disinfect every area/surface of your home possible with bleach. It’s very important to kill the virus quickly, as soon as anyone tests positive — and of course, to isolate.
And my advice — wear your mask, wash your hands, and stay 10 feet apart from other folks. Stay home if you can, and don’t take the risk. This will be a different kind of holiday season for us all, but I want you safe.
If you have had Covid, please take the time to go to the blood bank. There is a massive blood shortage, and plasma is needed. I believe the plasma transfusion helped to save my life and as soon as I’m released from quarantine, I plan to give back to help save someone else. Please join me in giving.
Side note: I’ve still got a lengthy recovery in front of me. The halls of the hospital were FULL and they needed my bed, and this hospital was the ONLY one within hundreds of miles willing to take me. Folks, this is SERIOUS. Please protect yourself.
It almost seems that my wife and I, unknowingly, have been prepping for this pandemic for years. Our daily vitamin regiment includes all of the vitamins Krista was given in the hospital and a half a handful of others.
Have they helped to keep us from catching COVID-19? There is no way to really know the answer to that, but there is also no way I’d change that regiment right now and take a chance.
Same goes with the masks we wear, staying pretty much isolated at home and work, and social distancing when we are not. If we catch it we catch it, but as long as there are ways to minimize the chance of getting sick, we’ll gladly adhere to them. Believe you me, taking the risk of catching COVID because we are careless is simply not a risk we are willing to take.
I wish more people felt the same way.
