Bearcats beat Clarkdale 42-12 for first win of season

By JAMES PHILLIPS,

The Forest Bearcats welcomed the Clarkdale Bulldogs to L.O. Atkins Field last Friday night in a Region 5 district matchup. After starting the season with five consecutive losses, the Bearcats put together a strong showing to open district play with a big 42-12 win for homecoming.

Senior Bearcat quarterback Dylan Grayson led the Cats offense completing 8-of-14 passes for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air, he added a touchdown run on one of his four rushing attempts and returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Devonyal Lofton was the Bearcats leading rusher in the game with 6 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Forest forced the visiting Bulldogs into four turnovers and capitalized on those mistakes on their way to lighting up the scoreboard with 42 points.

Travis Jones and Fa’Deldrick Boone each had an interception, and Grayson led the way on defense as well with 18 total tackles (9 solo). Jamal Watts joined in the tackle party with 12 tackles and one quarterback sack on the night.

The Bearcats were out gained on offense by Clarkdale, but the defense had a bend but don’t break mentality throughout the contest.

With the win, the Bearcats move to 1-5 on the season, and 1-0 in the all-important Region 5 standings. Even with the slow start to the season, the Bearcats playoff chances are still very much alive as they are tied with Kemper County for the district lead at 1-0.

Forest will have the opportunity to start their first wining streak of the season when they travel to Meridian to play SE Lauderdale (1-5) this Friday night.
