While the Republican-backed bill does include a universal school choice component, it also addresses a number of aspects within Mississippi’s education system, from student transfers and state employee retirement to standardized testing and the establishment of charter schools.
The Mississippi Education Freedom Act passed out of the House Education Committee on Wednesday by a roll call vote of 14-11 down party lines.

“If someone feels that God wants him/her to transform social structures, that’s an issue between him/her and his/her God. We all have the duty to serve God where we feel called. I feel called to help individuals, to love each human being. I never think in terms of crowds in general but in terms of each individual person. Were I to think about crowds, I would never begin anything. It is the person that matters. I believe in person-to-person encounters.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Another birthday celebration came and went this past week. It was kind of a quiet event around here. Yep, last Thursday was Elvis’ birthday, not mine. He’d have been 91 if he had laid off those fat-fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and a few pills here and there. Shame.
I did celebrate for him, though. Elvis music shuffled over and over again throughout the day as I read a few things on the Internet about him. There was also an AI image of the King at 91. Looked more like Lorne Green to me than Elvis Presley.

Employees of the Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center walked off the job Friday after not receiving any pay since Nov. 7, shutting down the facility.
In an email sent Friday morning to Leflore County Sheriff James Payne and Leflore County Administrator Cynthia Stanciel and shared with the Commonwealth, Leflore County and Youth Court Judge James Littleton said the detention center shut down since no employees of the center were at work to provide security, book juveniles held there or perform drug tests, among other services.

Below is a political opinion column by Sid Salter:
Columnist Sid Salter says kitchen-table issues have historically impacted what appear to be “safe” races in the most unpredictable ways. The 2026 midterms may well prove to be one of those elections.
As Mississippi approaches its pivotal 2026 mid-term elections, the national spotlight is already trained on our U.S. Senate race and potential kitchen-table issues in the state’s congressional districts.

Several months ago, I wrote an article regarding the status of waterfowl populations across the country. Not to digress, but in a nutshell, the numbers overall have been in a downward trend for many years. Again, I won’t go into the reasons, but I will reemphasize some points in this article. Since we are in the last few weeks of the 2025-2026 waterfowl season, I thought it would be interesting to poll hunters in various regions across the state to get their thoughts on how the season is going thus far.

A recent Gallup poll found 85 percent of respondents disapprove of Congress’ work. Reports suggest about 90 percent of people think term limits will align Congresspersons’ incentives with the common good. They won’t.
In the 2024 general election, incumbents won reelection more than 90 percent of the time; it’s 100 percent in some election cycles. If elections were truly competitive, incumbents would not win at that rate. Freed from competition, legislators’ incentives to are not aligned with the public good.

Apparently, the DC Santa Claus did NOT visit Linda Berry this year. All she got were clean MAGA lumps of coal along with $2.25 gas. So sad. Nor can anyone in DC make her happy (“Democrats Must Make Their Case,” Northside Sun, 12/12/25). Yet she believes the Democrats have the better solutions to govern if they would but take it on. That assumes that the Democrat leadership has ability to function like a normal political party. Nevertheless, she’s a real Democrat believer. In what, I would like to know.

Happy New Year everyone. The holidays are gone, and it is time to move on. I will admit, though, that I may not be able to handle a five day work week after the abbreviated last two work weeks of 2025. We’ll see.
It is kind of depressing watching the decorations come down in Forest. Most folks I’ve spoken with have said it looked the best and most festive ever. A tip of the hat to Patsy Nicholson, Renae Hurdle, and the city work crews that pulled it all together. It really was special.

Business was brisk on New Year’s Eve at Forest’s first, and only to date, package liquor store, Spirit World. Two more liquor stores applied for permits in late 2025, one planning to locate in the old River Rat location on Hwy. 35 just north of the Hwy. 80 intersection, and another in the former AMT Wholesale on Hwy. 35 across from Airport Road. Below, city crews were busy this week taking down the Christmas decorations in Forest as life returns to normal after the holidays.
