Although roadways remained clear in Scott County following last weekend's ice storm that crippled much of Mississippi, we still suffer from supply chain woes due to the storm. With many of the roadways to the west and north of Mississippi shut down or still just at at crawl, some store shelves are looking a little worse for the ware heading into another frigid weekend.

Entergy Mississippi CEO Haley Fisackerly speaks with The Grenada Star's Publisher Adam Prestridge during his visit to view storm damage in Grenada Thursday afternoon.
Winter Storm Fern coated Grenada County and much of north Mississippi in a thick layer of ice last weekend, uprooting trees, snapping limbs and loading down power lines and poles, leaving thousands of Entergy Mississippi customers in the dark for days.

Delta State’s nationally renowned NCAA Division II baseball team was supposed to open the 2026 season Friday against Harding (Arkansas) University in Cleveland.
That won’t happen. Boo Ferriss Field at Harvey Stadium on the DSU campus in Cleveland is covered in ice and snow. At noon Monday, the temperature was 21 degrees. The wind chill was 7. The weekend forecast is for more freezing temperatures. The DSU Statesmen are sometimes called the Fighting Okra, but they would be more like Eskimos if they played this weekend.

If you have followed my writing for any length of time, there should be no doubt about my love for the outside world. Whether I’m watching the foliage slowly turn from the deep green that growing seasons dictate to the fire of crimson and gold leaves gently falling to the earth, I wholeheartedly embrace the change. During the onset of the fall migration of waterfowl, I crane my neck with an ear towards the sky listening for faint cries of geese urging their leaders southward.

It was 72 degrees and balmy when we opened the balcony door of our French Quarter apartment — a “rented” French Quarter apartment that is — Sunday morning just before 7:00. Normally we would not be awake that early on a Sunday — checkout day — but this year there was a looming ice storm approaching Mississippi so we had opted not to go to breakfast, and to just pack up and head home, hoping to beat the weather.

The vast majority of states across the U.S. now allow some form of high school NIL. Mississippi is among the four that have thus far prohibited the practice.
Mississippi is currently not among the growing number of states that allow high school student-athletes to accept Name, Image and Likeness, or NIL, money or benefits. That could change if legislation filed by State Rep. Jeffery Harness (D) is signed into law.

After a recent successful bow hunt, JH came out of the woods before daylight vanished. He had his deer loaded and he just sat on his four-wheeler until dark so others hunting would not be disturbed. The sunset was magnificent and he took it all in. As he continued to wait for darkness, he heard a “buzzing” noise from above and he turned his eyes skyward. He watched birds flying across the timber heading for agricultural fields. The “buzzing” continued and he noticed the birds that were creating this sound were spiraling to the ground. “There were hundreds of them,” he related.

Sunday I will become an official Medicare Card toting sun of a gun. Yep, I’ll be 65. Old! Never meant for that to happen, getting old that is, but wife Danny and I will enjoy a New Orleans road trip this weekend and I suppose that will make up for it.
