Graduation was held for the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer Training Academy Basic Class #279 last month. Pictured is Deputy Vencheal Parks with Chief Deputy Brad Ellis and Sheriff Mike Lee. Deputy Parks was recognized with awards for expert in firearms with score 98 points, third place in academic achievement for classroom instruction - 91.8 points, and 2nd place overall in class – 96.27.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Morton Police Department that occurred on Highway 13 in Morton last week and resulted in the death of the suspect.
Authorities said the deceased man has been identified as 39-year-old Brandon Whitlock with a Florence/Richland address.
Deputies responded to a call regarding a subject attempting to enter vehicles in the parking lot of Koch Foods. Upon arrival, deputies observed the same subject driving a yard-truck through the parking lot.

JXN Water’s Interim Third-Party Manager appeared before the Capital City Revitalization Committee last week to defend the need to raise rates to maintain and operate the troubled municipal water system.

This afternoon, one of our school buses was involved in an accident while law enforcement was pursuing a suspect in a stolen vehicle on highway 13. During the pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle made contact with the school bus, prompting an immediate response from emergency personnel.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released their State Employment and Unemployment Summary for September of 2025.
Unemployment rates were higher in September in 8 states, lower in 2 states, and stable in 40 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Eighteen states and the District had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 9 states had decreases, and 23 states had little change.

We say it all of the time. Everybody says it all of the time. I was talking to someone last week at the front counter and she said it. What is it? The older you get the faster time moves on.
Today, right now, we are exactly two weeks from Christmas Eve. I have bought one gift. One! And that might just be all there is to the gift giving at the Beeland house this year.
It seems that we just pushed our chairs back from the Thanksgiving table, put our feet up to let the turkey and dressing settle, and now it is almost time to start taking down the Christmas tree.

Mississippi residents who applied for the Statewide Residential Safe Room Grant Program will start receiving notices this week that they have been selected for a reimbursement grant. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency received more than 11,000 applications for a lottery drawing. The program was designed to award 38 recipients from each of the state’s 82 counties. In those counties that did not have 38 applicants, those additional grants were placed into a second statewide lottery drawing and selected.

Waldo “Junior” Moore Pryor, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 10, 2025 after a two year battle with cancer. Hew was born on February 14, 1944 in Walnut Grove, MS to the late Waldo and Zola Mae Pryor of Forest, MS, but it would be Homewood, MS where he spent his youth growing up and a special place he called home.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Priscilla Ann Pryor and Jane Pryor Tadlock and brother, Paul Dewayne Pryor, Sr.

Forest celebrated 2025 Citizens of the Year Harry and Diane Robinson last Thursday with a reception at Colbert Commons, and again Friday night as they served as Grand Marshals for the annual Christmas Parade.
Representing the Forest Area Chamber of Commerce, A.J. Clay, opened the Thursday festivities by presenting the Robinsons with the official plaque followed by words from the couple’s granddaughters and then other friends and co-workers.
